Why N-acetyl-L-cysteine in particular?

The name N-acetyl-L-cysteine, or NAC, reveals what makes it special. It is an acetylated form of L-cysteine, in which the added acetyl group alters the chemical properties of the original amino acid, distinguishing it from ordinary L-cysteine.
