Choline – a key nutrient for the liver and vitality.
Although it is often classified as part of the B-complex vitamins due to its properties, choline is in fact a standalone essential nutrient. As the body is unable to produce sufficient quantities of it in the liver, regular intake through food or supplements is essential to meet daily requirements.
The richest natural sources are primarily of animal origin (egg yolk, liver, meat and fish), whilst it is also found, to a lesser extent, in plant-based foods such as soya, nuts and vegetables (e.g. broccoli and cauliflower).
Choline is essential for the smooth functioning of metabolic processes, contributing to:
- normal lipid metabolism, which prevents the undesirable accumulation of lipids in body tissues and the liver,
- normal homocysteine metabolism, an amino acid in the blood that plays a significant role in maintaining cardiovascular health.
